Recently, the First Lady refurbished the Old Family Dining room at the White House to include several abstract paintings, including an Alma Thompson piece which is the first contribution by an African-American woman to the White House collection. Also included in the refurbishment was a decidedly modern rug with subtle metallic threads, and several Rauschenberg paintings.
It makes me happy to think of this upbeat contemporary note in the building, as well as the beginning of a more diverse art collection in the People’s House. Kudos to the First Lady and her designers.
