Write with Me! Study Hall Time!

DownloadedFile-1What are YOU working on today? Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll do the same.

Above is a painting of Phyllis Wheatley. She was born in West Africa and wrote and published poetry while she was a slave to the Wheatley family. She used word-images of the Sun many times, a reference to the African religion she left behind. If she could write and keep writing even while working as a scullery maid after emancipation, what can we not do with our freedom and relative comfort? Write like your life depends on it. Because your life does–the life you want!

Today, I’m working on the new novel, which is called The Fruit of Queens. Those of you who read Eve’s Garden will recognize the title. It’s about a family of five daughters, all named after queens, and the littlest and main character is Esther–Queen Esther, her sisters call her, because she is plenty spoiled. Something terrible happens in the second chapter–may as well get it over quickly. And this morning I’m writing about the aftermath of that.

I’m working on the first draft of my book. It’s a generational story based on my own family history. So far, it’s unnamed, but I’m leaning towards “Paper Doll” … but I have a feeling that will come later! I’m on the beginning of the second chapter, but I feel a little stuck. Perhaps I can jump to the third (since it’s not technically linear)….

I jump around all the time when I write long form, Qristina. Most important to get it down. You can always link it up later.

I am trying to capture each month in a haiku. I may have to switch to a longer form.

I love Mrs. Crotty, Jane. Can’t wait to see that in print. I know others will be joining us later, too. Today I started on the novel, but ended up polishing a short story I’m thinking of sending to Drunken Boat. If I dare. It’s ravingly feminist, about a Rumney girl. On second thought, I dare. Why ever not?

Do dare. Well, Mrs. Crotty pushed in and displaced the new character. ‘She’ll just have to wait till I get settled in properly,’ she said. Will make another stab after dinner and see if I can just outwit her.

We seem to have all had productive days. What a great crop of work!

One of the things that I like about this method of dedicated time is that, throughout the week, my mind keeps tossing up new ideas, refinements, and embellishments that I can jot down. Then, when it’s time for the next session, my subconscious has already been reviewing the territory, and I have a glimmering of what comes next and so have a new agenda for the day. Next week, same time–see you all here, I hope!
