Write With Me Study Hall, Monday, March 28, 2016: Rocks to the Left of Me. . . .

Do you ever feel like you’re between a rock and a hard place with your writing? I have occasionally written myself into multiple corners at once and been at a loss to go forwards.

What do you do when that happens?

I have multiple coping mechanisms for that scenario, but the one that works for me most consistently is to get my body moving. At a walk, so I can notice all the details, I don’t necessarily think (at least not on my front burner) about my work, but somehow new vistas begin to take shape. It’s as if I’ve walked onto a peak and can see all the valley below at once. My manuscript as a whole begins to take shape in patterns, and I can see holes to fill where I once thought there were only stones.

And you? Are you burning forward this morning?

I worked on the 2nd draft of my advice column. That is something I never thought I’d write.
